On Saturday, a Marine Fighter Pilot was reunited in San Diego with a dog he saved in Iraq.

Nubs, named for his cut-off ears, greeted Major Brian Dennis at Miramar Marine Air Station when he arrived from Iraq on Saturday.  Friends of Dennis’ had raised over $3000 to have the dog flown to San Diego about a month ago.

While on patrol in Anbar province, Dennis found the stray dog who had a screwdriver stabbed into his side.  Dennis was able to nurse the animal back to health and build a bond with him.

Music for Dogs??

Recently, a study was carried out to see whether or not music has a calming effect on the behavior of dogs in home and shelter environments.  What the study revealed was that classical music has the most impact on dogs, and seems to help them relax a bit.

I have always been a firm believer that a dog’s behavior is an indication of the amount of stress we have in our lives.  Dogs seem to be constantly overwhelmed by their own stresses, and seem to pick up on ours as well.  Growing up, we would always leave classical music on for our dogs when we would leave the house, so this study really comes as no surprise to me.  I grew up literally watching the calming effect the music had on them.

Plan to add music to the lives of your 4-legged companions.  They will love you for it!

Wyoming 50th State to Join in Fight Against Dog Fighting

Wednesday, March 5th marks a milestone in the fight against dog fighting as Wyoming becomes the 50th state to make the illegal activity a felony.  Idaho had just marked the law a felony on February 25 of this year.

I am excited that the right information is finally getting into the right government hands to see issues such as dog fighting given stiffer penalties.   Dogfighting has been in the news recently due to the conviction of Michael Vick (or Beck, or whatever his name was), and I feel that it has made the key individuals sit up and take notice where they might not otherwise have done so.  It is unfortunate that it took a horrendous situation to shed light on this subject, but every single day there are horrendous situations that these dogs are living in and so you really have to look at the silver lining in this cloud.

If you know of anyone involved with dogfighting, I urge you to contact your local authorities.  Many humane societies across the country are offering cash rewards for information leading up to the conviction of such felons.

New Law in L.A. Requires Spay/Neuter of Cats and Dogs
March 3, 2008, 12:55 pm
Filed under: Dogs, pet law, spay/neuter law

According to the Associated Press, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed a law on Tuesday, February 26 requiring most dogs and cats to be spayed or neutered by the time they are four months old.

The law is aiming towards a goal of eliminating unnecessary euthanization of unwanted pets, and is one of the toughest pet laws in the country.   Although some animals are exempt from the ordinance such as show animals and guide animals, a first-time offender will have 60 days to comply with the law or face of fine of $100 in addition to community service.

Bob Barker, known for his Price is Right fame is also famous for closing his show by telling his audience to “have your pet spayed or neutered” was a strong advocate for seeing this law go into effect.  He says he now when he tells people to spay or neuter their pets, he can add “it is the law” to the end of it.
